I’ll Give You the Sun <— THESE ARE MY FAVORITE KINDS OF RECOMMENDATIONS!!! You know… sometimes I get one that’s short & sweet (<— P.S. I LOVE THOSE TOO!!) and it makes it into my Friday Finds, or onto a dedicated post to the series recommended, and sometimes… sometimes they come looking like a full on review, and when that happens, I love to turn them into a dedicated blog post.
And this one from Marina… is one of those!
Hi Maryse,
Ok, I NEEEEEEEEEEEEEED TO TELL YOU ABOUT THIS BOOK. It is DIRE. CAN I SCREAM FROM THE RAFTERS HOW MUCH I LOVE THIS BOOK!!!!! Jandy Nelson’s “I’ll Give You the Sun” It is transcendingly beautiful.
The writing in this book reminded me so much of How to Kill a Rockstar. I have not encountered an author yet that writes like Tiffani DeBartolo and now I’m thrilled to say I have. Or maybe it’s that the writing affects me in a similar way. I mean, some of the writing in non-sad parts makes me start to cry. Just from the writing itself. I have bookmarked almost every single page.
It is not smut at all. It is YA which I swore myself off of for awhile because I felt unfilled with it lately. But this book has some of the best writing I may have ever read. I just read that the author has an MBA in poetry from Brown which makes absolute sense. The writing is poetry.
It is resonating with me on so many levels it’s ridiculous. Sometimes I do wonder if things happen for some reason. I had no idea going into it but art and art school is a strong part of it so it is full of so many memories for me….
I don’t want to ruin any part of this book and I know I have strong reactions to some things waymoreso than others. But I got to this book from the crazy amazing reviews from other authors and they were spot on.
I am more than halfway but savoring it and sooooo not wanting it to end. I will have problems when it is over.
Move over Fault in Our Stars, this book….
I even read some passages out loud to my husband (which I never do) and he said he couldn’t get it out of his head all day.
Please, please read when you get a chance!!!
Kind regards,
MarinaP.S. Note from Maryse: This one made Marina’s “Best of 2015” list and she said:
Incredibly awesome. I read it first in 2014 and then reread in 2015 because it was my bookclub choice. It is EXQUISITE. The writing is poetry. Her descriptions are unlike anything I’ve ever read. And the story/storylines were just beautiful.
I’m not sure why this book resonates with me so much but it just does. It is not only a 2015 fave for me but up there as an all-time fave.
FIRST LOVE, FAMILY LOSS & BETRAYAL…
I’ll Give You the Sun
FIRST LOVE, FAMILY LOSS & BETRAYAL…
“…At first, Jude and her twin brother are NoahandJude; inseparable. Noah draws constantly and is falling in love with the charismatic boy next door, while daredevil Jude wears red-red lipstick, cliff-dives, and does all the talking for both of them.
Years later, they are barely speaking. Something has happened to change the twins in different yet equally devastating ways . . . but then Jude meets an intriguing, irresistible boy and a mysterious new mentor.
The early years are Noah’s to tell; the later years are Jude’s. But they each have only half the story, and if they can only find their way back to one another, they’ll have a chance to remake their world…”
